Career professionals now have access to a new resource, the Skills for Success Practitioner Competency Framework. This comprehensive tool supports practitioners in delivering training related to the Government of Canada’s Skills for Success program. The program focuses on groups that are underrepresented in the workplace and includes a model that provides nine foundational skills required for living, learning, and working.

The Framework is a valuable tool for career professionals. It allows practitioners to take ownership of their own professional development and ensure that they have the skills and knowledge needed to provide high-quality support to their clients. It includes several components designed to help develop and improve their skills and knowledge, such as self-assessment tools, a digital resource library, and a training inventory and growth plan. You will find this resource valuable if you are involved in the design, delivery, and/or assessment of Skills for Success training programs.

The Skills for Success Program
The Government of Canada developed Skills for Success. It assists individuals who face barriers to employment find and retain a job. This program offers comprehensive employment services and support, which includes skills training, job search assistance, and continuous coaching. The ultimate goal of this program is to help individuals obtain the skills, knowledge, and work experience needed to succeed in the current labour market. It also helps improve their employment prospects and attain greater financial stability.

The program is administered by a network of service providers throughout Canada. It’s tailored to meet the unique needs of a diverse group of participants, such as people with disabilities, newcomers to Canada, Indigenous individuals, and youth. Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) funds the program and it is delivered in partnership with provinces, territories, and other collaborators.
The Skills for Success Practitioner Competency Framework was developed by project partners SkillPlan and The Social Research and Demonstration Corporation (SRDC).

The tools include questions and prompts and can be used to identify and evaluate your competencies in each area, providing a structured way to reflect on your strengths and weaknesses. This can assist you in setting goals for your growth and development, as well as providing better support to your clients.

Digital Resource Library
The library is carefully curated to ensure that the resources are relevant, up-to-date, and useful for career professionals working in various areas. You can access a variety of high-quality resources, including articles, videos, podcasts, and other materials that are organized around the Core Competencies, Practice Competencies, and Advanced Competencies outlined in the Framework. Training Inventory and Growth Plan
The training inventory and growth plan is another component of the framework that you can use to create a personalized plan to address your professional development needs. You’ll be able to set specific goals, timelines, and actionable steps.

This component helps you take a proactive approach to your own professional development, ensuring that you have the skills and knowledge needed to provide high-quality support to your clients. You can use it to evaluate your current level of competency in each area of the Framework. By doing this, you will identify areas where you need to develop your skills and knowledge.

The growth plan then helps you create a roadmap to address these needs, outlining specific training and development activities that will support your ongoing education.
