Programs and Initiatives

Support for temporary residents

The Association for New Canadians offers settlement supports to all temporary residents on the Avalon Peninsula. These include temporary foreign workers, international students (MUN, CNA, and other post-secondary institutions), AIP-endorsed employees, as well as family members of these groups.

Settlement supports include: needs assessments; settlement plans; information on topics relevant to living in the province such as housing, health care, education, banking, etc.; permanent resident application assistance; provincial and federal program application assistance; K-12 education liaison for parents and children; and referral services for both ANC programs (English as a Second Language, employment programs and career services, community connections and volunteer programs, and child & youth programs) and community programs and services.

Anyone looking for advice can contact Sophia Solomon, the ANC’s Community Settlement/Integration Counsellor, at 709-552-4736 or

Supports for Atlantic Immigration Pilot

The ANC continues to offer Atlantic Immigration Pilot program supports at no charge to both employers and employees. Employers or potential candidates (temporary foreign workers or international students at post-secondary institutions) interested in learning more about the AIP program, can contact Zack Noel, the ANC’s AIP Officer, at 709-552-2262 or

Date set for Diversity Summit

Save the date! On March 19, the Association for New Canadians host the next Diversity Summit. This one will be at the St. John’s Farmers Market on March 19, co-presented with First Light.

Volunteer Opportunity

You can make a lasting difference in the lives of newcomers to St. John’s! The Association for New Canadians is recruiting volunteers for the Newcomer Match Program. The Match program connects newcomers with volunteers. The volunteers help newcomers learn English, introduce them to the community and establish friendships/connections.

This program works entirely around each volunteer's schedule. Once interested individuals complete the application process, volunteers work closely with the Community Connections Coordinator to find a suitable match and begin the program.

Individuals OR families interested in volunteering with the Newcomer Match Program are asked to email

Volunteer Orientation

If you’ve been thinking about volunteering with newcomers, here’s your chance! The Association for New Canadians has a meeting for anyone interested in any of the ANC’s volunteer opportunities, including conversation circles, helping newcomers learn about life in Canada, and assisting with homework clubs, the breakfast program and more.

The meeting is scheduled for February, February 4th at 7 p.m. at the ANC’s ESL Training Centre, 148 Elizabeth Avenue (off Smithville Crescent). Register to attend or get more information by e-mailing
